Definitions
- What does it mean, to see? "The plain man's answer (and Aristotle's, too) would be, to know what is where by looking."
- Vision is "the process of discovering from images what is present in the world, and where it is."
- Video processing is a field in engineering; it refers to digital manipulation of 2D images that are sequentially ordered in
time. Image sequences can be acquired by motion picture film and video cameras, or generated via computerized animation."
- Computer vision is a field in computer science; its goel is "for man-made machines to see and understand as people do."
It is about enabling computers (or machines) to use visual information in a useful way (ideally similar to how people
do). People "vision" easily, but it is a very complex problem for a machine.
- Imaging is a field of engineering; it is "the capture, transmission, storage, manipulation, and reproduction of images, by electronic, chemical, physical, or optical means."
- Machine vision is applied computer vision to industry and manufacturing. Computer vision mainly focuses on
computer-based processing of images. Machine vision also uses digital input/output devices and computer networks so to control
industrial or manufacturing equipment or product, e.g., a robot or visual inspection of items.
