CLaC Labs - S (or CLaC-S, for short) refers to the students and work of the CLaC Laboratories directed by Sabine Bergler.
CLaC-S participated in 5 DUC competitions in summarization, in 2003-2007. The CLaC summarizer, called ERSS, operates symbolically, using a chunker, the notion of coreference chains, and a graph clustering algorithm based on fuzzy set theory. This combination of features has proven to be very effective in the early phases of new tasks, when not enough data has been annotated for statistical systems.
The sentiment conveyed in text influences its perception and use. Sentiment tagging of word senses, rather than words, together with improved word lists and a model of sentiment projection onto the clause, sentence, and paragraph level show promise of improving the state of the art.
BioKI navigates scientific journal articles found through PubMed Central with a second level of keywords. BioKI is domain independent and analyzes full-text articles for low-frequency information, that is information that is not necessarily topical in an article and is not necessarily available from many different articles.
In the NP-heavy style of microbiology journal articles, the role of prepositional phrases (PPs) is crucial. PPattach is a heuristics-based system that finds attachment points for PPs and extracts events from NPs.
Reported Speech in newspaper articles delimits different belief spaces.
