Signing up for Project

This page explains how to sign up for a capstone project. The process depends on the source of project. In general, there are three sources of projects:

1)      Faculty member proposed projects

2)      Student-proposed projects

3)      Industry-proposed projects

Capstone projects should provide students with significant design experience and involve the intergartion of knowledge from several courses. The group size in most cases is six. Let us take a closer look at these three types of projects.

1) Faculty member proposed projects

The list of projects is currently available at Project Listing web page from the right menu (http://www.ece.concordia.ca/currentstudents/undergraduatestudents/capstone/projects-list.php ).

Some of these projects may be supported by industry. This list is updated until the project selection deadline, so make sure to check it regularly.

Projects, posted on the ECE web site, will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Available projects have status “Available”, and projects which are already taken have status “In progress”.

To apply for a project, students may approach the faculty member that has proposed the project. The faculty member may examine the qualifications of the students in order to decide whether to assign them the project. If the decision to assign the project is reached, the professor and the students fill out the Project Selection Form and submit it to the coordinator for final approval.

2) Student-proposed projects

Students may prepare and submit their own project proposal. The proposal should be described on the Project Proposal Form (Student) and submited to the coordinator via email. Remember to include the project title in the subject of the email message. The coordinator and the Engineer in Residence will revivew the proposal to check for issues such as project scope, feasibility, availability of resources to support the project, safety aspects and workload distribution among team members. Typically a meeting with the students is required for reviewing the proposal.

If a project proposal is apporved (after perhaps revisions), the coordinator will recommend it to a supervisor. Note that the students are not required to approach faculty members with their project proposals.

After a faculty member accepts to supervise the project (solely or jointly), the faculty member and the students must fill out the Project Selection Form and submit it to the coordinator for final approval. At this point, the project description will be posted on the Project List web-page, with status "In Progress."

3) Industry-proposed  projects

If, for example, after your internship, your company wants you to continue to work on your project or give you a more complex one, or you have a contact in a company that has a relevant project to do, we can discuss it. Industry-inspired projects are the best option for you: you get wisdom of both academic and industry supervisors, and you get exposed to the cutting edge technologies and their applications.

In general, the process is the same as for students proposed projects. However, there are a couple of things that are different. First, the industry supervisor or representative has to attend the proposal revision meeting. Second, those projects might be subject to Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA) between the students and the company. NDA terms and conditions will be discussed at the meeting with the company’s representative.

In the last step, all team members should fill out and sign Project Selection Form, get the signature of the supervisor, and submit it to the coordinator.

Projects will not be formally assigned to a group until the Project Selection Forms are signed by the coordinator.
