Fall  2006

How do you choose your project topic?

Your project is expected to be an implementation & experiment on a specific topic in Statistical NLP.

Here is a list of suggestions (if you are interested in something else, just let me know and we’ll discuss it)

-         Take a question from the book marked with 2 stars (**) or more…

-         Experiments with Language Models for Cracking Passwords

-         Experiments on Text Classification

-         Experiments on a NL ontology interface

-         Experiments in Word Sense Disambiguation

-         Experiments with Zipf’s laws

-         Experiments in Information Retrieval

-         Experiments in Open Domain Question Answering

Before starting, make sure that I approve your project.

If you want to do a team project (max. 2 people), talk to me about it.

What do you hand-in?

You hand-in several deliverables:

  1. Project Proposal:

-         what’s that? 1 page summary of your goal, methodology & expected results.  This proposal is like an “assignment” description that you write for yourself.

-         when do I hand it in? October 16 at the latest.

-         how do I hand it in? on paper in class and e-submission at the URL: https://eas.encs.concordia.ca/eas/authentication.jsp

  1. Status Report:

-         what’s that? 1-2 page summary of what you have done so far in relation to your proposal. Any expected variation from your initial plan must be explained.  Hey, it’s research… things don’t always go as planned.

-         when do I hand it in? November 6

-         how do I hand it in? on paper and e-submission

  1. Final Deliverable:

-         what’s that? A copy of your code and a 10-15 page report

-         when do I hand it in? December 4.

-         how do I hand it in? the report: on paper and e-submission; the code: through e-submission only

  1. Presentation

-         what’s that? a 10-15 minutes presentation of your final result.

-         when? Originally, I planned to have the presentation in class, but since we are too many, the presentations will be done in my office at a date to be determined (after Dec. 4)

-         what do I hand in? a copy of your slides, the day of the presentation

How will you be evaluated?

You will be evaluated on:

  1. Your methodology, analysis and depth of the experiments.  Note that (positive) results are NOT that important!  If your hypothesis makes sense, your methodology and your code are correct; but your results do not show what you had planned… that’s interesting too!!! As long as you analyze the results thoroughly.
  2. Your presentation (answering questions, organization and content of the slides, time-management, …)
