Building envelope research: current research

Building envelope serves as a barrier between the outdoor climates and the comfort indoor environment. One aspect of building envelope research concerns the transport phenomena across this barrier. These researches are the domain of the building engineering. It supplements the traditional fields of structural engineering and architectural engineering.

The transporting media include many physical parameters, such as: radiation, temperature, moisture, pressure, precipitation, etc. Canadian Building Digests at IRC/NRC collected many excellent articles to introduce basics on these aspects.

One of the current focuses of research concerns the combined heat-air-moisture transport in and through the building envelope. The research results will form the foundation for developing design guidelines for moisture control and management for the next generation of durable, affordable, and environmentally friendly buildings and homes.
