Abstract:
A new experimental method to study fungal response to tran-sient relative humidities is elaborated, including nonlinear regression techniques to model sigmoidal curves describing vegetative fungal growth. The statistical analysis of transient relative humidity effects on fungal growth is based on response variables de-duced from these curves. The time-of-wetness (TOW) is intro-duced as an overall measure for the water availability to fungal growth under transient conditions. Preliminary experiments with the common air-borne species Penicillium chrysogenum indicate that growth on gypsum-based finishes is only weakly affected for a T OW:50.5, whereas it accellerates strongly with increasing TOW-values>0.5.
