Abstract:

The decay and mold resistance of wood-based building panels can affect the extent of structural damage after flooding or failure of the exterior building envelope, and indoor air quality. Four common untreated commercial sheathing panels were evaluated for decay resistance using a standard laboratory method. The order of decay resistance of the panels was Douglas-fir plywood>southern pine plywood>southern pine oriented strandboard (OSB)>aspen OSB. The same panels, plus a commercial paper-surfaced gypsum board, were also evaluated for susceptibility to surface mold growth. The order of mold resistance of the tested panels was Douglas-fir plywood>aspen OSB approximate to pine OSB approximate to solid aspen>pine plywood approximate to gypsum board. All of the tested materials were prone to fungal decay and mold growth. None could be considered resistant to fungal degradation.
