Abstract:
One of the first steps in eliminating building interior fungal growth is building envelope defect prevention and correction. Although there are several other causes for indoor air quality problems besides moisture penetration of the building envelope, the treat of health claims by building occupants and the resultant "sick building syndrome" label has raised a new concern for carefully designing, constructing, and maintaining envelope systems and components. Time is a major factor. Concealed and unabated water damage allows mold colonies to develop and spread, sometimes undetected, in commonly occupied spaces.
