| The differences between mitigation and adaptation strategies are explained in terms of their environmental, institutional and political significance and linkages. The potential climate changes for Canada's different regions are presented and discussed for their overall and specific built environment impacts. Current national strategies and polices related to adaptation are still in a formative stage, but they recognize that responding to climate change requires actions not only to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also to adapt to climate change. A national Framework for Adaptation is expected in 2003. Examples are provided of both the public and private sector efforts to consider adaptation to climate change at various scales. An overview of potential Canadian climate change trends and measures related to mitigation and adaptation is presented, with implications for establishing a research agenda for the built environment. |
