Project title
Experimental Studies of Mg-Al-Sr System (In collaboration with CANMET-MTL).
Project Summary
Magnesium (Mg) alloys can replace other heavier materials in order to reduce weight in automotive and aerospace applications. The current use of Mg in automotive application is restricted to non-critical parts because of their low creep resistance especially at elevated temperatures. Diecasted Mg-Al-Sr alloys, developed by Noranda, offer creep resistance, superior diecastibility, tensile strength and corrosion resistance compared to commercially available Mg alloys with rare earth additions. To control the process conditions for the specific alloy properties, knowledge of phase diagram is essential. Although this alloy system has a high potential for automotive application, few data points are available for the ternary Mg-Al-Sr system. Through the course of this research I will investigate this system experimentally using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). A comparison will also be made with the existing thermodynamic data. This new experimental data will also provide a base for further refinement of the thermodynamic model. In this research, emphasis is given on Mg-rich corner because of our interest in Mg-alloys. This research will be conducted in collaboration with CANMET-MTL, Ottawa.
