The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) was specified as the application and service delivery platform of 3G telecommunication systems. It became the service delivery platform of 4G systems, and is now a strong contender for 5G systems. However, it has several well documented deficiencies (e.g. scalability, elasticity).
The Cloud Architectures for Scalable and ElaStic IMS (CLASSI – IMS) project started in 2014. It aims at the design, prototyping, and performance evaluation of architectures for scalable and elastic IMS. We will introduce platforms as a service (PaaS) that will enable the provisioning of scalable and elastic IMS functional entities and networks. We will also research the corresponding Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
