Abstract: |
Field studies with the Andersen single-stage sampler and the high volume Spiral Air System sampler were conducted in residential indoor environments to determine concentrations of airborne fungi. Correlation was noted between these sampler types in measurement of airborne fungal spores during the year-long study, but sampling bias with respect to spore size was observed. Monitoring was also conducted under controlled conditions in an experimental room using a variety of aerobiological samplers to compare the Andersen six-stage viable impactor sampler, the SAS impactor sampler, the RCS Plus sampler, and the Burkard spore trap for retrieval of airborne Penicillium chrysogenum spores. Aerosols of P. chrysogenum were introduced into an experimental room and allowed to settle onto carpeting, and air samples were taken under undisturbed conditions and following walking or vacuuming in the room. No statistically significant differences were noted between the measurements from the three culture-based sampler types. |
