| Carmen Maretic, an advocate for leaky-condo owners, said the provincial government should designate leaky condos a disaster, which would free up federal government funds to determine the scope of the problem and to pay for repairs.
His study found that like low-rises, many leaky high-rise buildings were designed with face-seal wall systems that let in wind- driven rain when they are imperfectly built. The report says most leaky high-rises require rainscreen wall assemblies, which include cavities designed to let water drain to the outside.
Leaky-condo activists say the HPO's estimate is low, and that leaky high-rises and other factors will push the total as high as 100,000 units. |
