Project Summary: Magnesium and its alloys are important for structural application, and demand for them will considerably increase in the coming years. This will have direct economic benefits in Quebec and throughout the region. However, significant research is still needed on magnesium processing, alloy development, joining, surface treatment, corrosion resistance, as well as, mechanical properties improvement. Magnesium is currently used in relatively small quantities for automotive industry, generally limited to diecastings. I intend to apply computational thermodynamics to construct the phase diagram of Mg-Al-Ca system. This diagram will enable better understanding of magnesium alloys as well as development of new alloys in this system.

For this purpose Gibbs energy of individual phases is modeled. The model is based on the experimental phase diagrams and thermodynamic data of the phases. The model parameters are collected in a thermodynamic database. Thermodynamic modeling begins with the evaluation of thermodynamic description of the three constituent binaries, namely Al-Mg, Al-Ca and Mg-Ca. By combining thermodynamic description of the binary systems and ternary experimental data, thermodynamic database of ternary systems will be developed. Establishing a thermodynamic database for Mg-Al-Ca system should offer a useful tool for understanding the behavior of different alloys in this system. The thermodynamic database enables the calculation of phase assemblage diagrams for the specific composition of the alloy under question. This in turn provides in depth understanding of the alloy’s behavior when changing temperature and/or pressure.
