Concept:
rainscreen, pressure equalized rainscreen principle
The CMHC consultant identified the use of "rain screen" technologies as the best method to prevent moisture intrusion problems in the wet, mild, coastal climate of British Columbia. A rain screen creates a 3/4 inch drainage cavity between the building's outermost exterior cladding and an underlying moisture barrier. The rain screen drainage cavity is wide enough to break the capillary action and surface tension of water such that gravity will then pull the water that gets behind the exterior cladding down and out through weep holes
