    Essay:

Project of biomarkers for indoor air, MVOC, by NFI, /1-1995-31/12-2000

"The main objective of this project is to develop and validate biomarkers for microbially related compounds in indoor air. It has been documented that microorganisms produce a great number of volatile organic compounds (MVOCs, Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds). It has also been documented, that human hair can adsorb organic comounds from ambient air, and that these compounds can be strongly bound to the hair matrix.

Our aim is to investigate if MVOCs in air can be used as biomarker for exposure to microbial volatiles indoor. Four different MVOCs have been chosen to represent both microbiologically relevant test substances as well as test substances with relevant physical-chemical properties. The study will cover both experimental and field studies. As a reference, commercially available adsorbents will be used in parallell.

The project is aimed to meet requests for a) exposure indicators for identification of sources to chemical and biological pollution, b) methods for characterisation of MVOC in norwegian buildings, c) screening methods for identification of biopollutants indoor and d) development of human biomarkers for chemical and biological exposure."
