| A lack of standards on mold toxicity and remediation is leaving a lot of uncertainty in how to deal with a rapidly spreading problem. As mold problems continue to grab headlines, insurers, building owners and remediation experts are grappling with ways to protect people and property while stemming the tide of mold-related claims. And lawmakers are facing their own struggle in developing standards that can be used to determine the appropriate extent of cleanups and what types of mold should be regarded as hazardous to health. Experts say it will be very difficult to answer some of the questions that standards should address. Insurers have a big stake in the mold problem. Claims have soared in recent years, fueled in part by high-profile cases, such as the suit filed by television personality Ed McMahon, and by some large jury awards. |
