Workshop on Autonomic and Agent Computing: Foundations and Applications at the International Conference on Ambient Systems, Networks and Technologies (ANT 2011), Niagara Falls, Canada, September 19-21, 2011

Autonomic and Agent Computing research seeks to address challenges in the specification, development and verification of open systems that can manage themselves given high-level objectives from administrators. The objective of this new computing paradigm is to manage massive and complex computing systems that go well beyond the capability of IT professionals. Such a complexity is derived from the following: 1) the need to integrate several heterogeneous software environments into one cooperative computing system; 2) the rapid stream of changing, as well as conflicting, demands at runtime requiring a timely and decisive response; and 3) the difficulty in anticipating and designing all the interactions among the elements of unpredictable, diverse, and interconnected systems. Autonomic computing is strongly related to autonomous computing where system components are autonomous software agents.

We invite quality submissions that develop new insights, high-level abstractions, patterns, languages, formal theories, reasoning, and methodologies for autonomic and agent computing. The aim of this workshop is to highlight the interaction between these two computing paradigms. The workshop also welcomes contributions addressing only one of these two paradigms, for example using autonomic/autonomous computing to implement self-* properties. Theoretical foundations of autonomic/autonomous computing (for example, game theory, category theory, argumentation theory, etc.) and applications (for example, web services and service computing, social networks, etc.) are of special interest for this workshop. We also appreciate submissions concerning experiences in application development, programming language and tool support. Accepted papers will be included in ANT-2011 proceedings, which will be published by Elsevier in the open-access Procedia Computer Science series (on-line and CD). Procedia Computer Science is hosted on Elsevier and ScienceDirect and indexed by Scopus (www.scopus.com) and Engineering Village (Ei) (www.engineeringvillage.com). This includes EI Compendex (www.ei.org/compendex). The papers will contain linked references, XML versions, and citable DOI numbers.

Specifically, the workshop's focus includes, but not limited to, the following topics in relation to autonomic and agent computing:

  • Theoretical foundations for autonomic and agent computing
    • Category theory
    • Game theory
    • Argumentation theory
  • Self* properties
  • Logics
  • Verification and model checking
  • Trust and deception
  • Interoperability
  • Conformance
  • Applications
    • Web services
    • Service computing
    • Social networks
  • Socio-economic models for autonomic and agent computing
  • Autonomic and multi-agent system architectures
  • Programming languages
  • Middleware
  • Patterns
  • The workshop will provide a great opportunity to discuss emerging techniques and identify future trends toward autonomic and agent computing.
