Identifying DeepFakes – Community Engagement

As a volunteer with Tech-Nest — a Concordia student-driven cybersecurity startup — I had the pleasure of engaging with over 50 participants in our DeepFake awareness booth.
Visitors tested their ability to detect fake content in real time, helping to raise awareness of the importance of digital literacy and online safety.

Can You Spot a DeepFake?
- Face Focus: Look closely at facial structure and alignment.
- Skin vs. Hair & Eyes: Look for mismatches in aging or sharpness.
- Eye Shadows: Shadows that don't match light sources are suspicious.
- Glasses Glare: Watch how light reflects — fakes often get it wrong.
- Facial Hair: Look for unnatural blending or missing stubble.
- Moles & Marks: Real faces have imperfections. DeepFakes often don’t.
- Blink Patterns: Too little or too much blinking can be a sign.
- Lip Sync: Lip movement not matching speech is a major red flag.
