Biography:

Currently, Dr. Pillay is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University. He held the NSERC/Hydro-Québec Senior IRC at Concordia (2009-2020). In addition, he is an Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. Leading to his current positions, he held the Jean Newell Distinguished Professorship in Engineering from 1995 to 2007 at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY. He has developed expertise in modeling, design, and control of electric motors and drives for industrial, electric vehicle and renewable energy applications. Dr. Pillay’s leadership capabilities are further illustrated through his Fellowship of IEEE, along with his memberships in the IEEE Power Engineering, IEEE Industry Applications (IAS), IEEE Industrial Electronics, and IEEE Power Electronics Societies. He is also a member of the Canadian Standards Association. In addition, he is a member of the Electric Machines Committee and Past Chairman of the IEEE Industrial Drives Committee of the IAS, Past Chairman of the Induction Machinery Subcommittee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, Past Chairman of the Awards Committee of the IAS Industrial Power Conversion Department. He has recently been elected to serve on the IEE Tesla Award Committee, arguably the most prestigious award in the area of the CUREe. He has organized and taught short courses in electric drives at IAS Annual Meetings. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and Technologists, U.K., and a Chartered Electrical Engineer in the U.K, as wells as being a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario. He was a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship for his PhD and received the Order of Mapungubwe from the President of South Africa in 2008 for contributions to South Africa in the area of energy conservation. To date, Dr. Pillay has supervised/co-supervised to completion 47 doctorate and 52 Master’s students; 34 Postdoctoral Fellows, Research Associate, Visiting Scholars and full-time researchers. Currently, he has 11 Ph.D students, 1 Master’s student, 1 Postdoctoral Fellow and 1 Research Associate. He has 192 journal papers published and accepted for publication as well as 313 conference papers and 3 filed patents and 1 standard. In the last 6 years (2016- 2021), he has 57 refereed journal articles and 64 refereed conference papers, with an h-index of 54 and 15360 citations on Google Scholar as of 17 MAR 2021).

Biography:

Dr. Lopes joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University in 2002 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in June 2013. His expertise lies in renewable energy systems and power electronic converters for distributed power generation and microgrids and has been very active with research on power electronics and renewable energy systems. For instance, he obtained a ConGrant with Canmet – ENERGY (Varennes) on “Smart Sustainable Energy Systems for Remote Communities.” He was a technical representative for Canada in Task 11 “PV Hybrid Systems Centre for Urban and Renewable Electrical Energy (CUREe) Dr. Pragasen Pillay 35 within Mini-grids” of the International Energy Agency – Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (IEA-PVPS), and the lead author of Report T11-07:2012 “PV Hybrid Minigrids: Applicable control Methods for Various Situations.” He has been a member of the Canadian National Committee on the International Electrotechnical Committee since August 2006. Dr. Lopes is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ). His international relations led to collaborations in Brazil and France, just to name a few, as well as with NRC, CANMET, Alcoa, GEO Data, and many others. Since the beginning of his academic career, Dr. Lopes has supervised/co-supervised to completion 6 PhD and 20 MASc students. He has 29 journal papers published and accepted for publication as well as 68 conference papers. In the last 6 years (2012-2018), he has 13 refereed journal papers and 30 refereed conference, and 1 other conference. To date he has 30 refereed journal papers and 67 refereed conference; with an h-index of 8 and 226 total number of citations (Web of Science, March 2015).

Biography:

Dr. Anjali Awasthi is Full Professor and Concordia University Research Chair (Tier-II) in Connected Sustainable Mobility Systems at Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering (CIISE), in Concordia University, Montreal. She received a PhD in industrial engineering and automation from INRIA Rocquencourt and University of Metz, France and a Masters in Industrial and Management Engineering from IIT Kanpur, India. Prior to Concordia, Dr. Awasthi worked at University of British Columbia and University of Laval where she was involved in several projects on industrial applications of operations research. In France, she was involved in many European projects aimed at improving urban mobility in cities, city logistics and on cybernetic transportation systems. Her areas of research are modeling and simulation, data mining, Information Technology and decision making, sustainable logistics planning, quality assurance in supply chain management and sustainable supply chain management. She is currently serving as the Education Chair for CORS (Canadian Operations Research Society), a senior member of ASQ (American Society for Quality), associate of LSRC (Loyola Sustainability Research Center), and regular member of CIRRELT (Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche sur les Reseaux d'Entreprise, la Logistique et le Transport). She is also the recipient of Eldon Gunn service award (CORS 2018, Halifax) and IEOM Special Recognition Award (4th North American Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management, Toronto, 2019).

Biography:

Walaa Hamouda received his B.Sc (Telecommunications & Electronics) from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Queen's University, Kingston, Canada in 1998 and 2002, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 1994 to 1996, he worked as a system engineer for Siemens R&D, Cairo, Egypt.
During his Ph.D study, Dr. Hamouda received many fellowships and scholarships including Ontario Graduate scholarships (OGS) and Queen's graduate fellowship, Queen's graduate award, IEEE Student Conference Award (ICC2001), and outstanding-engineering award (Siemens).
In July 2002, Dr. Hamouda joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University as an assistant professor where he is now a Full Professor.
From Sept. 2008-May 2009, he was the Associate Chair for Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Concordia University.
His current research interests are wireless communications, cognitive radios, ad hoc networks, cross-layer design, MIMO communications, power-line/smart-grid communications.

Biography:

Dr. Bagchi received the Ph.D. degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, M.S. degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and B.Eng. degree in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India.
His research interests include Structural Dynamics and Earthquake engineering, Structural Health Monitoring, Infrastructure Rehabilitation, Finite and Boundary Element Methods, and Computer Aided Design and Engineering.
Dr. Bagchi has industrial experience in both Civil Engineering and Information Technology. He has received a number of prestigious awards including the NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and ISIS Canada Postdoctoral Fellowships, ENCS Teaching Excellence Award, Concordia University Provost's Fellow.
He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario and affiliated to CSCE, ASCE, CAEE, and ISHMII. He has authored/coauthored more than one hundred articles in technical journals and conferences, two patent applications, and a number of technical reports for academia and industry, and delivered keynote and invited lectures in National and International Conferences.

Biography:

Muthukumaran Packirisamy received the B.S. degree from the University of Madras, Chennai, India, the M.S. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and the Ph.D. degree from Concordia University, Montreal, QC, Canada.,He is currently a Professor and the Concordia Research Chair of Optical bioMEMS with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Concordia University. He has experience with many microelectromechanical systems industries in Canada. He is also involved in the development of bioMEMS devices in collaboration with industry. He has authored or coauthored more than 225 articles published in journals and conference proceedings. He holds nine patents. His current research interests include optical bio-MEMS, integration of microsystems, and micro- and nano-integration.,Prof. Packirisamy is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineers. He was a recipient of the I. W. Smith Award from the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineers, the Concordia University Research Fellowship, the Petro Canada Young Innovator Award, and the ENCS Young Research Achievement Award.

Dr. Boby received his B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 2010 from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam, India and the M.Tech. degree in Electronics Design and Technology in 2014 and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 2017. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in PEER group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Concordia University, Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Biography:
Dr. Akrem received a bachelor’s degree from Misurata University, Misurata, Libya, in 2007, and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Concordia University, Montréal, Quebec, Canada, in 2012 and 2018, respectively, all in electrical engineering. He was a Research Associate with the Power Electronics and Energy Research Group at Concordia University in Montréal from May 2018 to November 2018. In December 2018, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Misurata University in Libya as a Senior Lecturer. There, he have taught the following courses: Controlled Electric Drives, Fundamentals of Electrical Machines, and Electrical Machines I & II. Also, he supervised several Undergraduate Capstone Projects. In April 2022, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Concordia University as Post Doctoral Fellow under the supervision of Professor Pragasen Pillay.

He is currently working towards the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at Concordia University, Montréal, Canada.

Tamanwè Payarou received the Bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering department from the University of Dokuz Eylul, Izmir, Turkey, in 2016 and the Master's degree from Concordia University, Montreal, QC, Canada, in 2018 in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Concordia University, Montréal, Canada.
Tamanwè is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Concordia, under the supervision of Prof. Pragasen Pillay. He is a recipient of the Concordia Merit Scholarship ENCS for his Master’s program. He is also the recipient of the Concordia University International Award of Excellence for his ongoing Ph.D.
