Building envelope research: lumber industry and construction.

The Canadian lumber industry represents a $20 billion annual market (Industry Canada, 2005).?A large portion of the lumber is dimension lumber which is used as studs for the wood frame residential house construction. The studs for residential construction in Canada are produced from two most common groupings: SPF and Hemlock-Fir, although other species can be and are used.?SPF (denoting a number of soft wood species of spruce, pine, and fir) studs are widely used.?Trees of these species tend to grow in stands of mixed species. It is usually not practical to separate them into individual species during logging and manufacturing. So, all the species are harvested, processed, graded and marketed together (WTO, 1989).?Shipped studs from manufacturers contain a mix of all the three species. Materials, their properties, and selection of them are an important part of building envelope design and performance.
