Abstract:

While successful action can and is being taken to reduce production and trade in the substances that cause ozone depletion, it is likely that a very real health problem will remain for some time. Beyond assisting and ensuring compliance with the international control measures already agreed, there are only limited additional regulatory approaches which may speed recovery of the ozone layer, and none of these are considered likely to greatly alter the timing or the magnitude of peak ozone losses. It is therefore suggested that the greatest influence on the magnitude of future associated health impacts is likely to be the actions of individuals. Research which provides further information on the risk factors and mitigation measures should assist programs aimed at motivating individuals to lessen the potential risks associated with exposure to increased levels of UV radiation.
