Project title

Thermodynamic Modeling of Mg-Al-Y System

Project summary

Magnesium alloys are promising materials for variety of structural applications in automobile industry due to their high specific strength. The weight saving has a strong influence on fuel consumption and consequently on the environment. Moreover magnesium alloys are versatile and they can be easily shaped using various methods of metal working like casting, extrusion, and rolling. However mechanical properties of these alloys such as creep resistance, castability and corrosion performance need to be improved. Hence several new magnesium alloys have recently been developed to obtain optimal combinations of mechanical properties, corrosion performance, and creep resistance.

The effect of the rare earth elements like yttrium on the properties of magnesium alloys justifies the high cost of production, especially when they are used in aerospace applications.

In this project Mg-Al-Y system is being investigated. The phase diagram of this system will be optimized and constructed by thermodynamic modeling using the experimental thermodynamic data from literature. Generating phase diagram by thermodynamic modeling saves a lot of time and money.
