Power Converter-based Emulators in Renewable Energy Field


Various power electronic converters can be controlled to run as numerous electrical sources and loads. This provides a flexible and easy way to test and analyze the characteristics of the emulated machines or the instrument under test as well.

Power converters can emulate distinctively many kinds of dynamic machines/systems such as induction motors and synchronous generators as well as static machines/systems such as transformers and different power system loads for diverse testing purposes. The complete system and its control signals are shown in the figure below.

Large scale power system transmission network with renewable energy integration can also be emulated with reconfigurable modular power converters. This would allow system testing and demonstration in the desired environment without requiring the full scale transmission, generation, and load equipment.

Due to the incessant increasing power demand and the requirement for a clean energy, renewable energy sources and the related topics have lastly drawn more attention. Among them, wind energy is becoming an important component in the modern power grid, and its penetration percentage continues a steady increase. The high level penetration of the wind power system has motivated studies considering its integration with power system.
