The LEED Green Building Rating System? is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Members of the U.S. Green Building Council representing all segments of the building industry developed LEED and continue to contribute to its evolution. LEED standards are currently available for:

New construction and renovation projects (LEED 2.0/2.1)

Existing building operations (LEED-EB, Pilot version)

Commercial interiors projects (LEED-CI, Pilot version)

"Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) has since adapted the USGBC LEED? rating system to the specific concerns and requirements of buildings in Canada.

LEED? is a point-based rating system; points are earned for building attributes considered environmentally beneficial. LEED? differs from other rating systems in that it has quantified most of the "green credits". For example, 5% of the building materials must be from salvaged materials to earn a point for the salvaged materials credit. http://www.enermodal.com/leed_explained.html
