Title Audio effects box
Supervisor Cowan, G. & Raut, R.
Description The group will investigate the signal processing behind various audio phenomena, such as distortion (i.e., for an electrical guitar), wah-wah pedal, echo, treble and bass control, automatic gain control, and the removal of vocals. Various audio effects will be considered, analyzed, simulated and implemented. Implementation can be either using analog circuits, such as amplifiers, filters, envelop detectors and other analog signal processing circuits, or the effects can be implemented digitally using an analog to digital converter, digital signal processor (either a DSP chip or an FPGA), and digital to analog converter. Finally the operation should be demonstrated using an audio source and a loudspeaker. It should be noted that many audio effects, particularly those for electric guitars can be implemented using readily downloadable schematics for hobbyists. It will be important for students to demonstrate a command of the subject matter through simulation and analysis, in addition to implementation.
Student Requirement ELEC 311, 312, 361 For the DSP implementation: COEN 312, 313, 315, ELEN 442.
Tools For analog implementation: Spice, bread boarding, oscilloscope, function generators. Digital implementation: For VHDL for an FPGA implementation. T.B.D. for DSP chip.
