Title | Gameboy on an FPGA
Supervisor | Mr. T. Obuchowicz
Description | The Gameboy is a handheld portable gaming system made by Nintendo in 1989. It uses a modified Z80 processor, has a 160x144 4 bit monochrome LCD display, 8 digital input buttons, and audio output. The purpose of this project would be to recreate the system on an FPGA and allow games to be played using none of the original Nintendo Gameboy hardware. This project should be compatible with all existing commercial Gameboy games. This project requires reverse engineering the modified Z80 processor, graphics subsystem and audio subsystem of the Nintendo Gameboy. An off the shelf Z80 core will be used and modified if possible, if not, one will be developed from scratch. Depending on the decided video output device, VGA or LCD, a compatible display controller will have to be designed. A gamepad, either wired or wireless would have to be created.
