Title Photovoltaic Powered Water Pump
Supervisor Dr. Luiz A. Lopes
Description The objective of this project is to design and implement a photovoltaic system capable of powering a water pump (an isolated load with or without energy storage in batteries or ultracapacitors). Calculations and models will be developed and a scaled down version will be implemented using the TI renewable energy developers kit. This consists of a power electronic system with a dc-dc boost converter, a dc-dc buck converter and a single-phase dc-ac converter. It also contains a dedicated digital signal processor (DSP) for control, monitoring and generation of the required gating signals. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for the converter connected to the PV array will be developed as well as control schemes for the battery charger (if implemented) and for the dc-ac converter so as to balance the intermediate dc bus as well as regulate the voltage at the isolated load (water pump). A solar array simulator from Agilent shall be used as the main energy source of the system. It can be programmed with varying characteristics to represent the variation of the solar irradiance.
