Title |
Appliance Remote Control (A.R.C.) |
Supervisor |
Dr. Shayan |
Description |
The internet of things (IOT) is taking over the tech world, more and more companies are turning their attention to
this technology and finding ways to incorporate this concept into their products and services. Home and building
automation products are, to date, one of the most widely available solutions in IOT. Adding connectivity and
intelligence to the home means more control and more security for the home owner. Being able to control a light
switch and monitor your power consumption from anywhere in the world is becoming more and more available to
the average consumer thanks to IOT.
The appliance remote control (A.R.C) is a device that is intended for consumer use. It acts as an intermediate
between the wiring from the fuse panel to the appliance plug, replacing the traditional electrical faceplate. Ours is a
modular interchangeable smart faceplate that will have builtin
safety features for appliances and provide the user
with usage statistics. The modular design lets the user convert their wall plug into a variety of faceplates such as a
usb charging port and speakers. The device has a builtin
safety feature specially designed for ovens or ranges,
which prevents fires that can occur due to user negligence. The device measures temperature, time and proximity
of the user to the appliance, and will warn the user should it sense any user negligence. The device will provide the
user with the ability to turn on and off the appliance from anywhere using internet connectivity. |
Student Requirement |
The device shall log the power consumed and temperature.
● The device shall measure temperature
● The device shall measure time
● The device shall measure electrical power
● The device shall be able to determine when the oven/range has been left unattended
● The device shall provide the user with a warning message indicating that the oven/range has been
left unattended.
● The device shall provide the user with the ability to remotely turn on and off the power to the
electrical consumer.
● The device shall be able to autonomously turn off the oven/range should the temperature be too
high or there is no user response to a warning within a certain period of time.
● The device shall recognize the type of faceplate attached.
● The device shall provide the user with power usage and temperature statistics. |
Tools |
The user shall be able to swap faceplates
● There shall be an enclosure containing the device and power control circuitry
● The faceplate shall be secured to the enclosure
● The faceplate shall have an electrical connection to the electrical circuitry
● The device shall be connected to the internet
● The user interface options shall vary depending on the type of faceplate attached
● The user interface shall allow the user to select which box to control in the case where there are
multiple boxes in use. |
