Title Embedded sensing for Lunar rover wheel
Supervisor Krzysztof Skonieczny
Description The Canadian Space Agency has announced that Canada will send a rover to the Moon by 2026. This project is in collaboration with a Canadian space robotics company bidding to develop that rover; the company intends to collaborate by providing engineering feedback at key points of the project and perhaps some hardware funding. The goal of this project is to augment the ability to sense wheel-soil interactions by embedding a 3D-printed wheel with a matrix of custom strain-gauge sensors. Subsystems include designing the sensor matrix itself, developing a 3D printing process for embedding the sensors into a wheel, implementing data acquisition and filtering, modifying wheel designs based on data analysis, and developing rover-level software to control maneuvers based on the incoming data.
