Title | Rural Intersection Side-impact Collision Alert System
Supervisor | S. Hashtrudi Zad
Description | About 50% of the collisions in urban areas and 30% of collisions in rural areas are intersection collisions. The rural collisions tend to have worse outcomes due to the higher speeds of the vehicles involved.
The purpose of this project is to build a system that (i) monitors the traffic in a rural stop-controlled intersection, and (ii) in case there is a possibility of side-impact collision (e.g. stop sign violation), issues a warning/alert to all vehicles involved (including vehicles entering the intersection from other roads). • The system should be able to monitor all types of vehicles and should not rely on vehicles for providing their position and speed information, i.e., no vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications is assumed for monitoring. • Detecting violating buses and trucks is considered a higher priority since these vehicles are heavier (and more dangerous) and that they do not have automatic emergency braking systems. • The system should not rely on electrical grid for power. • The system should work day and night, throughout the year. The deliverable is the monitoring and alert system. |
