    Energy used by buildings 40% of total energy consumption in US

    In 2005, commercial and residential buildings accounted for 40% of total energy consumption in the United States (U.S. Department of Energy 2006). Yet according to the United States Department of Energy, 40% of the energy used to heat and cool the average building is lost to the phenomenon of uncontrolled air leakage through the building envelope. That means up to an astonishing 16% of our total energy consumption may be wasted ev ery year.
