Title Room Sounder for Wireless Communications
Supervisor Trueman, C, Davis, D. & Segal, B. (McGill)
Description The project will develop a measurement system that performs wide band radio frequency measurements within rooms and corridors, using an HP8720A network analyzer. Electrical engineering content: The students will be required to obtain field data from a transmission-reception system, over a 2 GHz bandwidth. This system is composed of a network analyzer and antennas. The students must design the measurement system. Wideband antennas will be designed and built, and calibrated. A calibration method for the overall measurement will be designed. Measurements will be carried out in rooms and corridors. The measured data will be analyzed using software developed by the project group. Computer engineering content: The students will be required to extract data from the network analyzer and write the data to a computer. The data will be processed using the Matrix Pencil Method (MPM) to obtain time domain data. Students will be required to implement the MPM method as a program in c++ or matlab, based on a published article and a description in a PhD thesis. The MPM method inputs measured amplitude and phase over a 2 GHz bandwidth and calculates the arrival time and amplitude of rays at the receiver. The students will be required to create Geometrical Optics (GO) models of the indoor environments where the measurements are performed and compare the results of GO modeling and measurements. The measured ray amplitudes can be used to adjust the reflection coefficients in the GO model to improve the accuracy.
