Title Stealth Technology
Supervisor Drs. C.W. Trueman and R. Paknys
Description

Students will develop a system to experimentally measure and numerically model the radar cross section of various test targets, including metal plates, spheres, cylinders, cavities, and radar absorbers. More complex shapes such as scale-model aircraft and automobiles will also be considered. Techniques to control the radar cross section will be investigated. ELEC456 Antennas is a co-requisite for this project. In the first phase of the project, a thorough investigation of refereed scientific literature must be completed. Students will compile a literature survey of radar cross section measurement techniques, and write a report that examines performance-limiting issues with respect to (a) frequency range, (b) target size, (c) spatial resolution capability, (d) signal-to-noise ratio, (e) influence of the room walls, (f) influence of target support structures, (g) influence of cables. Limitations of what can be experimentally measured will depend on the characteristics of the test equipment. Suitable software will need to be developed, for the control of the laboratory instruments. Central to the measurements will be the HP8720 network analyzer, ARA positioner, and anechoic chamber facility in EV15.167. These instruments are to be controlled with software on a PC, with LabView and possibly other software. In parallel with the experimental, work electromagnetic models will be developed, using numerical techniques. Computer codes Such as NEC, FEKO, and others might be used. Some codes using numerical methods might have to be developed from first principles.
