Title Outdoor street navigation for people with limited vision
Supervisor Dr. Yousef Shayan
Description A blind person will be guided through streets outdoors to his destination. We'll use sonar which reflects sound waves on potential obstacles to avoid hitting them. Also, a camera will detect the different traffic light colors and alert the user when the light is red. In addition, there will be a built-in map in the app which will guide the person to get to his desired destination. The user will be able to say where he intends to go to the phone, and the shortest path will be calculated. The phone app will be more or less voice controlled. This project involves hardware/electronics, software, and wireless. The wireless part will involve sending sonar waves and analyzing them to determine what obstacles block the way. It will also involve analyzing the traffic lights to determine their color. The software part will deal with programming the map to appropriately guide the person to find the right destination, and orient him/her to go around any obstacles. It will also involve writing the obstacle avoidance and color recognition algorithms. The hardware/electronic part will be to build a sonar detection system and selecting an appropriate camera to detect traffic lights. This project will be of a huge help for the blind or people with weakness of sight and will have a large market. It can be further developed in the future to include indoor locations.
