Title Computer vision analysis tool for droplet movement on a microfluidic chip
Supervisor Internal Supervisor(s): Maria Amer - External Supervisor(s): Alison Hirukawa
Description At DropGenie, we are automating gene editing at the bench. Our goal is to reduce the time and cost scientists spent on the bench and increase their time spent on doing research. We achieve this by leveraging a technology called Digital Microfluidics (DMF). This technology enables users to move small volumes of biological reagents on a chip using a computer. There are various different ways to move these reagents: simply moving a droplet back and forth, generating a droplet from a volume of liquid (ie. dispensing), merging droplets together, mixing droplets together and splitting droplets. The current challenge we are facing is that we require an analysis tool that is able to inform us how well a droplet performed a specific movement (moving, merging, mixing, dispensing, splitting) and preferably automated. This is why we think that the best way to tackle this challenge is to implement Computer Vision. To be able to analyse and measure, the analysis tool to be created will have to include : - object tracking - velocity/acceleration measurements - shape recognition - size measurements - multithreaded programming - capability to interpret the data gathered Also, since Computer Vision requires a camera, an interface will have to be built which would hold the camera, lighting and the chip together. (can be made using a 3D Printer or Laser Cutter.)
Requirement General Programming Computer Vision programming (like OpenCV) (optional but desired) Multithreaded programming (optional) CAD designing (optional)
Tools Laptop (for programming in Python preferably) - 3D Printer for making the interface (provided by the company) - Laser Cutter for making the interface (optional) - Digital Microfluidics System (provided by the company)
