Title Emulation of an electric vehicle motor drive
Supervisor Luiz A.C. Lopez & Chunyan Lai
Description With the moving of many classes online, there are challenges to conduct experimental work in all areas including electric vehicles. One answer is to emulate the real electric vehicle drive system in real time so that the user can be trained or conduct research remotely. The aim of this project is to emulate an electric vehicle motor drive using an OPAL-RT real-time simulator. The emulated electric motor drive, for example, the induction motor drive used by Tesla, should be able to achieve the desired speed and acceleration under different loading conditions. Different PWM schemes will be explored to provide the gating signals to the power inverter of the motor drive system, and then the harmonics, efficiency, and etc. will be analyzed. The developed motor drive emulation system will be used for online teaching and laboratory experiments in the future.
Requirement Knowledge of basic physics (torque, speed, etc.). Knowledge of electric motors (ELEC 331), power electronics (ELEC 433), and controlled electric drives (ELEC 440). Controlled electric drives which is offered in the fall could be taken con-currently in Fall 2021. Experience with C programming and Matlab/Simulink are also needed.
Tools [Electric motors, Opal-RT real-time simulator OP4510 (this will also be taught in the Fall by a graduate student), MATLAB, Oscilloscopes, multi-meters etc.]
