Concept:
IAQ - indoor air quality
"Indoor air researchers should have an overarching objective to create a more sustainable world through provision of healthful, comfortable, and productive indoor environments with the wise use of materials and energy." --Spengler, J.D., 2002, Research futures for healthy indoor air
"The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported in the 1994 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) proposal for a regulatory standard, that 30% of the 70 Mill. ¡°indoor¡° workers have poor air quality (Federal Register, 1994). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reported that based on their review of previous health hazard evaluations (HETA) related to building/facility problems 42% of 104 buildings investigated had evidence of ¡°water damage¡° (Crandall et al. 1996)." -- Johanning, E. (Ed), 2001, Bioaerosols, Fungi and Mycotoxins: Health Effects, Assessment, Prevention and Control
"A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that the level of pollutants in air within homes, offices, schools and other buildings can be 25 times to occasionally 100 times higher than the outdoor air ... " -- Aerias, LLC -
In fact, recent estimates place the direct health care costs of poor IAQ in the US at $30 billion, with sick leave and productivity losses adding another almost $100 billion annually (Fisk and Rosenfeld, 1997).
US has 89 million indoor workers (nonindustruial, nonagricultural). ("US: 70% of US workers-approximately 89 million persons-are employed in nonindustrial, nonagricultural indoor settings" -- Mendell et al., 2002, Improving the Health of Workers in Indoor Environments: Priority Research Needs for a National Occupational Research Agenda ))
Professional Associations (by New Buildings.org)
There are numerous professional associations representing designers, consultants, trade and industry associations and others whose work affects and is affected by indoor air quality issues. Some of these are the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), ASHRAE, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Sheet Metal and Air-Conditioning Contractors National Association (SMACNA), National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), Association of Air Balance Contractors (AABC), International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), American Institute of Architects (AIA), International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and the International Code Council (ICC).
