  • Concept:

    research, funding

Research funding in Canada, and all over the world, has made and is making dramatic changes over the last two decades. The traditional free funding for elites/aristocrats are long go. One reason, I hypothesize, is that the return period for research funding is getting longer. It is hard to see the return on researches in the short term planning. Of cause, other reasons due to global social-economic-political changes may have being the more visible causes.

In Canada, research funding is often linked to direct support from the industry (among many other categories) and is more likely favoring strategic directions.

An example of old research attitude: " Leroy Stevens (stem cells) stumbed on his mouse while working at an establishment that gave its scientists the freedom to pursue whaever they bumped into. 'Ifelt perfectly free to do anything I wannted, and didn't have to account to anybody," -- The Proteus Effect: Stem Cells and Their Promise, Ann B. Parson, 2004.

    Quotes

"It is a good morning exercise for a research scientist to discard a pet hypothesis every day before breakfast. It keeps him young." -- Konrad Lorenz.

"Any breakthroughs must come through dedication and good will, luck and occasional funding." -- W.B. Rose
